Because of its size, the Indonesian archipelago has a wide range of climates with numerous micro-climates produced by the nation’s diverse landscape, including snow-capped equatorial mountain tops in Papua (Irian Jaya).
Close to the equator, Indonesia tends to have a fairly even climate year round
with little extremes differentiating winter from summer. There are two basic seasons: the wet season (November to March) and the dry season (April to October). The climate on surrounding islands and Flore’s coastline tends to be arid, with a low average annual rainfall. West Manggarai is influenced by monsoonal winds. The dry southeast monsoon wind dries up the landscape during the months from April to October. During the resulting dry season there are often droughts, particularly on coast areas and islands. The northwesterly monsoon winds blow from November through March and bring with them large amounts of rain. Higher elevations are often wrapped in fogs or clouds and are extremely humid. In these hilly regions the temperature is lower than near the coast. The night time temperature drops with an average of 0.5° per 100 m of increase altitude. The dry season in Nusa Tenggara is more prolonged and severe than in other parts of Indonesia. The resulting droughts make water supply problematic in many parts of West Manggarai.
