A brief overview of the main forms of land transportation available in in the cities and rural areas of West Flores.

Ojek - Motorbike
taxi
Motorbike taxis or ojeks
are common everywhere in Indonesia.
Ojek drivers will drive around seeking
passengers or can be hailed from many local road sides.
If you become lost while visiting Indonesian, consider
hailing an Ojek driver and showing the address you seek. He'll
bring you to the desired destination for a modest, highly negotiable, fee.
Ojeks are prevalent
throughout West Flores, especially in the capital city of Labuan Bajo.

Bemo - intra-city
or town bus
Bemos are
minibuses that represent an important form of transportation in towns and
cities. They operate over fixed routes and will pick up passengers waiting on
the roadside. Ask for the directions before boarding a Bemo and let the driver or conductor know where you wish to
disembark. Bemos are an excellent alternative
to the Ojek Motorbike taxis,
especially in the rainy seaon.

Truk Kayu - Wood
Sided Truck
These trucks operate mainly in remote areas where their high wheel base and
sturdy construction are well-suited to often-time poor road conditions. The
Indonesian word "Kayu" means wood and
it denotes the wooden sides and wooden benches used for passenger seating in
the back of the trucks. "Truk Kayu"
is the major form of transport for local residents in rural areas. When
visiting West Flores be sure to enjoy the
exciting experience of traveling on a "Truk Kayu".

- Travel Companies
Travel Companies provide buses for covering longer distances
from one city to another. These busses operate on fixed routes and generally go
from point to point with no intermediate stops. The buses will, however, pick-up and drop-off
passenger at their departure/arrival addresses. This is a relatively comfortable
way to travel popular among both visitors and locals.

Bus Umum - Public
Bus
Public buses are for used for traveling from one town or
city to another. They depart and arrive via public bus stations. Exact time schedule are
not available and busses will only depart once all seats are occupied.

Sewa Mobil - Private
car rental
Privately rented cars are by fare the most convenient form
of individual travel. Rental is
typically on a "per day" basis and negotiating
for the right price is common practice.
The trans-Flores route is well known to most drivers. Some
drivers are also familiar with Bima-Sumbawa,
and Lombok-Bali routes.

The terminal for the public buses is 9 km out of Labuan Bajo on the main road to Ruteng. This location place is known as “Nggorang.” Take an Ojek (motorbike taxi) or a Bemo (city bus) to the bus terminal.
