Traveling overland to  West Flores

A brief overview of the main forms of land transportation available in in the cities  and rural areas of West Flores.

Ojek - Motorbike taxi
Motorbike taxis or ojeks are common everywhere in Indonesia. Ojek drivers will drive around seeking passengers or can be hailed from many local road sides.

If you become lost while visiting Indonesian, consider hailing an Ojek  driver and showing the address you seek. He'll bring you to the desired destination for a modest, highly negotiable, fee.

Ojeks are prevalent throughout West Flores, especially in the capital city of Labuan Bajo.
Bemo - intra-city or town bus
Bemos are minibuses that represent an important form of transportation in towns and cities. They operate over fixed routes and will pick up passengers waiting on the roadside. Ask for the directions before boarding a Bemo and let the driver or conductor know where you wish to disembark.  Bemos are an excellent alternative to the Ojek Motorbike taxis, especially in the rainy seaon.

Truk Kayu - Wood Sided Truck
These trucks operate mainly in  remote areas where their high wheel base and sturdy construction are well-suited to often-time poor road conditions. The Indonesian word "Kayu" means wood and it denotes the wooden sides and wooden benches used for passenger seating in the back of the trucks. "Truk Kayu" is the major form of transport for local residents in rural areas. When visiting West Flores be sure to enjoy the exciting experience of traveling on a "Truk Kayu".

Perusahaan Transpor - Travel Companies
Travel Companies provide buses for covering longer distances from one city to another. These busses operate on fixed routes and generally go from point to point with no intermediate stops.  The buses will, however, pick-up and drop-off passenger at their departure/arrival addresses. This is a relatively comfortable way to travel popular among both visitors and locals.

  Bus Umum - Public Bus
Public buses are for used for traveling from one town or city to another. They depart and arrive via  public bus stations. Exact time schedule are not available and busses will only depart once all seats are occupied.

Sewa Mobil - Private car rental
Privately rented cars are by fare the most convenient form of individual  travel. Rental is typically on a "per day" basis and negotiating for the right price is common practice.

The trans-Flores route is well known to most drivers. Some drivers are also familiar with Bima-Sumbawa,  and Lombok-Bali routes.

It's recommended that you rent a car with a driver and English-speaking guide

The terminal for the public buses is 9 km out of Labuan Bajo on the main road to Ruteng. This location  place is known as “Nggorang.” Take an Ojek (motorbike taxi) or a Bemo (city bus)  to the bus terminal.
